Preppy Saver in Buckhead Patch!

Welcome new readers from Buckhead Patch!  I am so glad that you have found my blog!

My name is Shannon and I recently quit my day job to run my stationery company, The Preppy Ladybug.  I need to save money now more than ever, so I started Preppy Saver!  I have been couponing for 3 years, and have saved thousands of dollars on my grocery and drug store bills over the years.  But saving isn't limited to the grocery store!  I love the lifestyle I have come to know, and I don't want to have to give up shopping, eating out and going out with my friends.  That is where Preppy Saver comes in.  I will share tips, ideas and deals for saving money on things that you like to do, so you too can live a fabulous life for less!

I will not post grocery lists and coupon databases on my blog, but I will tell you where to find them, and I will highlight some of the great deals that I get each week.  This week I will also begin a Coupon 101 series that will teach you how to find and use coupons.

In addition, like Beth mentioned in her article, I teach coupon classes in the Metro Atlanta area!  If you have a group in your neighborhood, your church, or elsewhere that are interested in learning how to coupon, please send me an email at preppysaver@gmail.com to set up a class.  The classes are $10 per person and include valuable handouts and spreadsheets that have helped me learn to plan my shopping trips and track my savings.

Follow me on facebook and on Twitter @preppysaver!

I am looking forward to helping you save money and have fun!  I hope you enjoy my blog!

B1G1 Smoothies at B&N

Beat the heat with this deal from Barnes and Noble Cafes!

Buy One Get One Free Smoothie - Heads up, offer expires on July 11th!

(Thanks Southern Savers!)

CVS 101

CVS is one of my favorite stores to shop.  I always get great deals on items I use and the savings are always really high, making it even more fun.  However, it takes some time to figure out and it can be overwhelming to beginners.  I have been asked a lot lately how it works, so I am going to try to explain it here!

First, make sure that you have a CVS loyalty card.  This will be used EVERY time you shop.  Not only do you have to use it to get sale prices and Extra Care Bucks (ECBs), but you will also earn 2% back on every purchase you make. Be sure that you give your phone number (this is how they find you if you forget your card), and your email address (you'll get great coupons in your email!).

What are Extra Care Bucks (ECBs)?  Basically, ECBs are CVS money.  You earn ECBs by buying an item that advertises ECBs back, quarterly as your 2% reward, or for buying prescriptions.  They print out at the bottom of your receipt.  Cut them off and save them like they are cash.  The next purchase you make at CVS, use them like money!

You can maximize your savings by "rolling" ECBs.  Instead of shelling out a ton of money and then getting a whole bunch of ECBs back, you can split your transactions and pay for each one with ECBs from the previous transaction.  Let's look at some examples from this week:

    Transaction 1:
       (1) Complete Contact Solution, 12 oz, $7.99 (Earn $7.99 ECB)

           Total: $7.99 plus tax
           ECBs earned: $7.99

    Transaction 2:
       (1) Balance Bar $1.69 (earn $1.69 ECB)
       (1) Bic Soliel Razor $6.99 (earn $3 ECB)
              Use:
Manufacturer Coupon -$3 off Bic Soleil Disposable or System, Razor, SS 7/10
       (2) Coca-Cola Products, 2 Liters, 99¢
       (1) Caliber One Subject Notebook 33¢

Total after coupons: $7.99 plus tax
            Use: $7.99 ECB
Total after ECB: ONLY PAY TAX!
            ECBs earned: $4.69

This isn't a great week at CVS, but you still got contact solution, a balance bar, a razor, 2 liters of coke, and a start on school supplies for less than $9, and you still have $4.69 in ECBs to use next week.  If you had started out with ECBs, your out of pocket (OOP) would have been even less!

A few tips:
-If you have a $/$$ coupon (like $5 off $25), always hand that over first so that your total is before coupons.
-Always make a list and have a current ad handy so you know exactly what is on sale.  Sometimes the sale item is very specific so you want to make sure you get the right product.
-Having a calculator is helpful when you are trying to figure out transactions.
-You must spend as much as you have ECB for, so filler items come in handy.  In transaction #2, I used the  33¢ notebook as a filler as I was 33¢ short of the $7.99 ECB I had.

Tips for a "Staycation"

Yesterday my mom and I took a trip to the Atlanta History Center.  As southerners with a long history in both Atlanta and Charleston (where Rhett is from), we love anything to do with Gone With the Wind.  The history center has a temporary exhibit with original papers from Margaret Mitchell's manuscript.  On the way, my mom instructed me to look in her coupon folder and pull out a tourist guide.  At first, I thought she was nuts for carrying around this visitor guide, but when I opened it up and found $5 off coupons for our admission, I realized she is a genious!  This prompted me to write a post about planning a successful "staycation" on a budget.

-Pick up Visitor Guides.  These guides have valuable coupons to museums and attractions all over the city.  Usually these coupons are good for everyone in your group.  You might even discover an attraction you didn't even know about!

-Purchase Groupons (or other discount coupons) in advance.  Today's Groupon is for the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, somewhere I've always wanted to go but haven't ever had the time.  You can also buy discount coupons to new restaurants, spas, painting classes, rafting trips and other great activities you might not do on a regular basis.

-Look for coupons at the checkout counter at local stores.  Recently, I found Buy One Get One Free coupons for LanierWorld (formerly Lake Lanier Islands Waterpark) at Chick-fil-A!  I have also seen coupons for Stone Mountain and other attractions at grocery stores and other fast food restaurants.

-Visit a State Park.  A lot of times these are free or just a small fee for a car to get into.  Our favorite site is Amicalola Falls in North Georgia.  It costs $3 to get in, but we can spend a whole day there.  We pack a picnic lunch, climb the waterfall, play frisbee on the grassy area, and just relax.

-Research free activities.  If you look, there are lots of free things to do in the city.  Some of Atlanta's offerings include a free show at the Puppetry Arts Center on Wednesdays, Family Fun Days on the fourth Saturday of every month at Centennial Park, and Kids Workshops at Home Depot.

Other tips for a successful "staycation" include scheduling start and end dates, putting chores on hold, and taking lots of pictures, just like you would on a regular vacation!

Have fun!
